60 series Land Cruisers came with a variety of engines from the factory in various places around the globe. These engines include the 2F, 3FE, 3B, 13BT, 2H, 12HT, 1HZ, 1HDT, 1HDT-FE, 1PZ
In addition to these Toyota engines there are many engines that are frequently installed into 60s. These engines include GM Vortec and Ram Jet engines and Cummins 4BT and 6BT engines.
60s also came with a variety of transmissions including the H41F, H42F, A440F, and H55F
Some popular non-OEM swaps include the, 4L60E, NV4500, and TH400
One of the easiest things to do to make any vehicle more off road worthy is to beef up the suspension. There are several upgrades you can make to FJ60s including doing a spring-over-axel (SOA) upgrade, installing heavy duty shocks and leaf springs, and doing a shackle reversal
FJ60 and FJ62's in the United States came with 12-volt electrical systems. In other countries they came with 24-volt systems. Regardless of the voltage of the electrical system you can upgrade the alternator, install a dual battery system to provide a backup battery for starting as well as a deep cycle battery for power electrical accessories like refrigorators and winches, replace incandecent light bulbs with LED lighting, and upgrade the ignition system.
A little protection always adds to your piece of mind when driving your land cruiser off road. Upgraded front and rear bumpers can be added as well as sliders, skid plates, diff covers, and even external roll cages.
Adding storage space and/or organization is especially popular for those who like turning their cruisers into expedition vehicles.
Beefing up the drive train on a cruiser can make a huge difference in its capabilities off road and is sometimes even necessary when installing oversized tires (usually 35 inches and above). There are some great products for FJ60s to help them gain traction and prevent broken parts. These products include the Marlin Toybox, various gear ratios, differential lockers, axle housing, inner axles, and the Marlin Hy-steer
Many non-US 60 series came with full floating rear axles with differential lockers straight from the factory.
Once you lift your FJ60 or FJ62 you might feel like you could use some more stopping power. In addition to upgrading the front discs and calipers you can also replace the rear drum brakes with disk disk brakes.
Getting air into and out of the engine is a big variable in the performance equation of any engine. Some performance upgrades include adding a snorkel, replacing the stock manifold with headers, high flow mufflers, carburetor upgrades and rebuilds, and emissions system removal (desmog)
